Our Spiti bike batches run from late May to early October. The right month depends on whether you want snow, quiet roads or the steadiest weather. This is how each month usually looks, based on the dates our batches ride. Road status changes every year, so the captain confirms it before each batch.
The short answer
June to September is the steadiest window for the full circuit. Kunzum La and Chandratal are usually open, and the Kinnaur side is clear. September is the quieter pick, with clear skies and fewer riders on the road.
May
The earliest season. Our first batch usually leaves at the very end of May. The ride goes in through Kinnaur and reaches Kunzum La and Chandratal near the end, which gives snow more time to clear. Expect cold nights and snow patches at the high points.
June
The start of the main season. Roads are opening, mornings and nights are cold, and Kunzum La can still have snow walls on the sides. Chandratal is usually reachable.
July and August
Peak season. The lower valleys around Kullu and Kinnaur get monsoon rain, and landslides can slow the road on the way in. Spiti itself sits in a rain shadow and stays far drier. The captain can adjust the day if a section is closed.
September
Often the best month. The rains have eased, skies are clear and the roads are quieter. Mornings at altitude are cold, so carry proper riding layers.
October
Our last batches leave in the last days of September and finish in early October. Beyond that, nights are very cold and early snow can close the high passes, so we do not run the bike trip later.
November to April
Not bike season. Heavy snow closes Kunzum La and the Manali side. If you want Spiti in the snow, we run a winter 4WD expedition on the Shimla and Kinnaur side instead.
Questions
What is the best month for a Spiti bike trip?
June to September is the steadiest window, and September is often the clearest and quietest.
Can I do a Spiti bike trip in May?
Our first batch leaves at the end of May. The ride reaches Kunzum La and Chandratal near the end of the trip, which gives snow more time to clear, but conditions vary from year to year.
Is a Spiti bike trip possible in November or December?
We do not run the bike trip then. Snow closes Kunzum La and the Manali side, so winter Spiti is done on a 4WD expedition on the Shimla and Kinnaur side.
Does it rain in Spiti in July and August?
The lower valleys on the way in get monsoon rain and landslides, but Spiti itself is a high-altitude desert and stays much drier.
