How does the Spiti bike trip work from Delhi?

The tour runs Delhi to Delhi. On day 1 you board an overnight Volvo from the Delhi pickup point to Bhuntar near Kullu. Day 2 is an acclimatisation day with no riding, and you collect your bike on day 3.

After the ride you reach Manali on day 9 and take the overnight Volvo back to Delhi, arriving on the morning of day 10. If you would rather stay on in Manali, we can arrange it at extra cost and move your Volvo ticket to the next day.

What is the Spiti circuit, and what is Shipki La?

The Spiti circuit is the loop around the valley: in through the Kinnaur side and out over Kunzum La to Manali, or the other way round. Our ride goes in through Sarahan, Chitkul and Kalpa, and comes out via Kaza, Chandratal and Manali.

Beyond the standard circuit, the trip adds Sarahan, Chitkul near the Indo-Tibet border, Khab Sangam where the Sutlej and Spiti rivers meet, the Shipki La route from Kalpa to Nako, and Tashigang at 15,256 ft, home of the world's highest polling station. The Shipki La route depends on permissions and weather, so carry your Aadhaar card.

Best time for a Spiti bike trip

Our bike batches run from late May to early October, and the trip is listed for June – September. June to September is the steadiest window, because Kunzum La and Chandratal are usually open and the Kinnaur side is clear. The Chandratal leg comes near the end of the trip, which gives the snow more time to clear.

We run the bike trip in summer only. For snow and winter roads we run a separate 4WD expedition on the Shimla and Kinnaur side.

Month by month: May to OctoberBest time for Spiti in general

Spiti bike tour or a rented bike?

Renting a bike and riding on your own works for experienced riders who are happy to plan permits, fuel stops, repairs and rooms themselves. On this package the bike, fuel for the whole ride, a Royal Enfield mechanic with spares, a backup vehicle, permits and stays are already arranged, and a tour captain rides with the group.

If you already own a suitable motorcycle, you can join the group with it for ₹22,999 per person, with fuel included. The Chandratal permit is not part of that plan.

Tour or self-ride: how to decide

Safety, support and altitude

Day 2 is a full rest day at Bhuntar, and height is gained slowly through Sarahan, Kalpa and Nako before Kaza. A tour captain and marshals ride with the group, a mechanic carries spares, and the backup vehicle holds your luggage, an oxygen cylinder and an oximeter. You can take a seat in it whenever you need a break.
