You can reach Ladakh and ride it two ways: join a guided group, or rent a bike in Leh and plan everything yourself. Neither is wrong. The right one depends on how much you want to arrange and how much risk you are happy to carry at 5,000 m.
What you manage yourself on a self-ride
Riding on your own gives you total freedom over dates and stops. It also means every decision and every problem is yours.
- Finding and inspecting a rental bike, and settling its deposit and terms
- Arranging permits for Nubra and Pangong and carrying the right documents
- Planning fuel stops, because petrol pumps are far apart on the high routes
- Booking stays and camps for each night, including in peak season
- Fixing punctures and breakdowns yourself, or finding a mechanic
- Deciding alone when weather or altitude means you should stop
What a guided tour takes off your plate
On our 5 night / 6 day Leh Ladakh motorcycle expedition the logistics are already done, so you spend the day riding.
- A Royal Enfield Himalayan with fuel for the full ride
- A mechanic and a backup vehicle that carries your luggage, an oxygen cylinder and an oximeter
- A tour captain who rides with the group and decides on weather and road closures
- Inner Line Permits, the Ladakh union fee and environmental charges
- Stays, with breakfast and dinner as per the itinerary
When a self-ride makes sense
Choose it if you have ridden in the mountains before, you are comfortable fixing a bike, you can travel on flexible dates and you want a very personal route. Carry spare tubes, a basic tool kit and plan a rest day on arrival.
When a guided tour makes sense
Choose it if this is your first Himalayan ride, you have limited leave, you want one price that covers the bike, fuel and permits, or you would rather ride with a group and a captain. Prices start at ₹19,999 per person for two riders sharing a bike.
Questions
Is a guided Ladakh bike tour safer than riding on your own?
A tour adds a mechanic, a backup vehicle with an oxygen cylinder and a captain who decides on weather and closures, so there is help close by. Riding anywhere in Ladakh still carries risk, so wear proper gear and rest on day one.
Can I bring my own bike on a MountainBea tour?
The package includes a Royal Enfield Himalayan with fuel. Ask us on WhatsApp if you want to discuss your own bike.
