Ladakh or Spiti with Kids: Is It Safe for Families?

Taking children to Ladakh or Spiti: which trip and season suit families, altitude and kids, long drives, and when to wait until they are older.

Updated 7 Nov 2026 5 min read

Families ask us often whether Ladakh or Spiti is safe for children. It can be, with the right trip, the right season and a relaxed pace. This is general guidance; speak to your child's doctor before any high-altitude trip.

Which trip suits a family

Our Ladakh Moon Land tour is the easiest: an SUV trip graded easy to moderate, starting with a rest day in Leh, and it can run as a private vehicle for your family. In Spiti, the summer backpacking tour travels by tempo traveller or SUV and climbs slowly through Kinnaur. Motorcycle trips are not designed for children.

Altitude and children

Leh is at about 3,500 m and Kaza about 3,650 m, with passes much higher. Children can get altitude sickness like adults. Watch for headache, vomiting, unusual tiredness, poor sleep or loss of appetite, and tell the trip captain at once. Our trips carry an oxygen cylinder and first aid, and the plan can change.

Long drives

Some days are 6 to 9 hours on the road. Bring snacks, water, motion-sickness remedies your doctor recommends, and something to do. Spiti days are generally longer than Ladakh days.

The best season for families

June to September: roads are open, days are warm and nights are cold rather than extreme. Avoid winter Spiti with young children, when nights can fall to -40°C.
