Trans-Himalayan Expedition Diary: 13 Days from Manali to Leh via Spiti
"There are trips, and there are journeys. The Trans-Himalayan expedition from Manali to Leh via Spiti Valley is the latter — 13 days, 2,000 kilometers, 6 high-altitude passes, and more memories than a camera can capture." — Rajesh Kumar, Expedition Lead
Day 1: Manali — The Beginning
The expedition starts in Manali, where 12 riders from across India gather at our base. There's a mix of excitement and nervous energy. We allocate the Royal Enfield Himalayans, do a quick orientation ride to Solang Valley, and go through the route briefing. The real adventure begins tomorrow.
Days 2-3: Into Spiti Valley
The ride from Manali to Kaza via Kunzum Pass (15,060 ft) is baptism by fire. The road from Gramphu deteriorates rapidly — gravel, slush, and the occasional water crossing. But the moment you crest Kunzum Pass and see the Spiti Valley spread out below, every bump in the road is forgotten. Kaza welcomes us with hot momos and butter tea. Day 3 is spent exploring the high villages — Langza's golden Buddha, Hikkim's post office (we all send postcards home), and Komic at 14,931 ft.
Days 4-5: Monasteries & Moon Lakes
Sunrise at Key Monastery is a spiritual experience. The 1,000-year-old structure glows golden in the first light. We ride to Kibber, cross the Chicham Bridge (Asia's highest), and head to Chandratal — the Moon Lake. Camping here, watching the lake change from turquoise to deep blue to silver as the stars come out, is one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.
Days 6-9: The Manali-Leh Highway
We loop back to Manali, rest for a night, and then begin the Ladakh leg. The Manali-Leh Highway is the stuff of legend. Baralacha La, the Gata Loops (21 hairpin bends), the vast Sarchu plateau, and finally Tanglang La at 17,480 ft. Each pass is a milestone, each valley a different world. By the time we reach Leh, the group has transformed from strangers into a family.
Days 10-12: The Crown Jewels of Ladakh
Khardung La at 18,380 ft — the signboard that launched a million Instagram posts. The descent into Nubra Valley with its surreal sand dunes. The ride along the Shyok River to Pangong Tso, where the lake shifts between shades of blue you didn't know existed. The sunrise at Pangong is worth every kilometer of rough road. We ride back to Leh via Chang La, stopping at Thiksey Monastery — the 'Mini Potala'.
Day 13: Farewell
The certificate ceremony is emotional. Thirteen days, two Himalayan kingdoms, countless memories. We exchange numbers, promise to meet again, and head to the airport. As the flight takes off over the brown mountains of Ladakh, I realize — I came here to ride a motorcycle, but I'm leaving with so much more.
