Nako

Nako

A high village around a small lake, where the green hills turn to cold desert.

Altitude
about 3,660 m (12,010 ft)
Best time
Best: May – October; winter for the frozen lake

Nako is the village where Kinnaur ends and Spiti's cold desert begins. A small lake sits in the middle of the village, with a monastery beside it, and in winter the lake freezes.

Both our Spiti trips pass through Nako on the way to Tabo and Kaza. On the summer tour you may stay here or in Tabo, and you reach it after following the Sutlej upstream as the hills lose their green.

What to see
