Kaza

The main town of Spiti, where our groups rest and explore for two days.

Altitude
about 3,650 m (11,980 ft)
Best time
Best: May – October for the full circuit; winter for snow

Kaza is the largest town in Spiti Valley and the base for almost everything in the valley: Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, Komic and the road on to Kunzum Pass and Chandratal.

On our summer tour you stay two nights in Kaza, with a full day for the nearby villages. That day is also deliberate acclimatisation, because you reach Kaza after several days of climbing through Kinnaur. The winter expedition uses Kaza as its turning point.

What to see

  • Key Monastery
  • Kibber village
  • Langza and its Buddha statue
  • Hikkim post office
  • Komic village
  • Chicham Bridge

Travel tips

  • Avoid overexertion on the first day while you acclimatise
  • Carry cash and a power bank: network and services can be limited
